And what is there to talk about? Well 2008 was a pretty good year. A Dodge won the Daytona 500 for only the second time since Richard Petty won his last in the famed number 43 back in 1974 (Ward Burton won in 2002 in an Intrepid). Kansas won the Men’s NCAA Basketball championship (whatever, Duke rules anyway!), a team from a city other than NY or Boston won the World Series (Philly), and Jimmie Johnson won his 3rd Sprint Cup Championship (in a row, the only other drive to do that is Cale Yarborough). No, I don’t really care much for basketball or hockey but if you must know, the Celtics and the Red Wings won respectively.
Well the Panthers just won the NFC South division and will be the number 2 seed in the playoffs, have a week off, and host a divisional round game here in Charlotte 2 weeks from now. They are the only team in the NFL this year to go unbeaten at home, 10-0 including the 2 preseason games. That’s awesome!!! Go Panthers!!!!
We will be out of town for the New Years celebration (going to Atlanta!) Not sure if I will post before then but if I do not I hope everyone has a dafe and Happy New Year!!
For anyone who reads my blog 🙂 Merry Christmas! Hope your holiday is filled with love, family, and joy. Please remember the true meaning of Christmas in that we are celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. It is Him we think of at this time of year. As they say He is the reason for the season.
I want to share my testimony that I know God lives and that His Son, Jesus Christ lives and is the Savior and Redeemer of the world. He loves and knows each of us and only wants us to turn to Him. Please remember Him this Christmas and throughout the New Year.
Thanks for reading and stayed tuned for more.
Well it was the biggest game of the weekend (except for the other big game in the AFC) and the Panthers came up short. I won’t say we blew it because from where I was sitting we didn’t. It went back and forth most of the game. When the Giants scored, the Panthers would score and vice versa. Only at the end did it seem like the Panthers ran out of gas…on defense anyway. In the second half and overtime the Giants outscored them 21-7. It only went to overtime when the weather took over and pushed what would have been a game winning 50 yard John Kasay field goal wide to the left. It was on the mark but you could almost see the wind pushing it over. Sad indeed.
Well now that it is over, the Panthers will only get the second seed in the NFC playoffs (assuming we win against the Saints next week or the Falcons loose). We will host at least one game in the playoffs after the bye week (again, if we win the division) and if the Giants loose their first playoff game (hey one can hope right) then the NFC Championship game will be here in Charlotte. Now that would be cool.
In other football news I won the championship game in the fantasy league I have been in since 2003. I won it once in 2005 and this year and last year I was the number 1 seed but was beat in the playoffs last year, but this year I won it all. Last year I had a record of 11-2, best in the 8 year history of that league. So in the 6 years I have been there I have had the number 1 seed twice, the best season record ever, and won the championship twice! I RULE!!! 🙂 but it sure does help to have players like DeAngelo Williams on my team who scored 4 touchdowns against the Giants. That is the second time this year he scored 4 touchdowns in one game. Not too shabby!
Go Panthers! Let’s lock up the division and take a much deserved week off before we start our run tot he Superbowl!
Wow! That’s about all I can say. No wait…WOW!!!!! That’s better. We have not just one but two! Count them two (2) games this weekend with home-field advantage at stake.
In the first game there is the Steelers (11-3) going to Nashville to take on the Titans (12-2). According to this cool playoff scenario generator at Yahoo the Titans don’t have to win this game, but it is better for them to win at home this week than to have to win on the road at Indy AND rely on the Browns to beat the Steelers next week in Pittsburgh. At the beginning of the season I picked the Steelers and Cowboys for the Superbowl. I’m getting pretty close with the AFC side but dangit all I will be rooting for the Titans in this one!
In the NFC my beloved Panthers (11-3) are traveling to the Big Apple to take on the New York Football Giants (11-3) in what will be the deciding game for who gets home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. For the Panthers it is a MUST WIN for them. They have to win this one. If they don’t they will still be the number 2 seed and host at least one game in the playoffs (and the NFC Championship game should the Giants fall in their first game), but they need to take care of business, go up there and show the rest of the league that the Panthers are for real!
This is a great weekend for football. Stay tuned…
Well I know that Christmas hasn’t arrived yet, but I just wanted to check out some new themes here on WordPress and I think I like this one the best. It lets me add a custom pic for the header and of course I had to show off one of the greatest Dodge cars of all time, the Challenger. I will probably rotate that pic out from time to time as well. I have some great pics of the new 2009 Ram (my next truck!). If you haven’t seen how tough this truck is run over to ramchallenge.com to check it out.
I can’t believe I am saying this but the new Ford looks to be pretty tough as well. I don’t think I will ever buy a Ford though, but if I did it would be a truck. After all they built the first pickup truck ever. Found a site where Ford did some comparisons with the other major trucks and it seemed to hold its own, if not flat out beat the others hands down. Very interesting indeed. Check out the videos here.
Well anyway, hope you like the new theme.
Man what in the world is happening to NASCAR? Just 6 months ago Richard Petty sold a majority of the business to Boston Ventures, an investment business, in the hopes of breathing life back into the crown jewell of NASCAR. A Petty car has not been to victory lane since 1999 and Bobby LaBonte seemed like their best hope when they signed him up. Also 6 months ago at the same time they extended Bobby’s contract for 4 more years as a driver and beyond to serve in some type of capacity in Petty Enterprises. Basically it was a lifetime contract (or so it seemed). But today they announced that that contract has been tossed out the window. Seems like they decided together that it would be better for the two to part ways.
Petty Enterprises is in talks with Gillett-Evernham Motorsports for a merger and would only take the 43 car that Bobby drove. They already basically got rid of Kyle (Petty, not that snot nosed kid from Las Vegas) and he isn’t even sure of what he will be doing next year. Now Bobby is out of a job too. Seems that General Mills pulled their sponsorship over to Richard Childress Racing and left the 43 high and dry for a full time sponsor.
Here is the kicker for me though. If the merger between Petty and GEM falls through, Petty Enterprises will run the 43 as a one car team! So whowill be the driver if you let Bobby go? Chad McCumbee was supposed to drive the 45 so where does he fit in all this?
I think Kyle should be brought back to drive the 43 for Petty Enterprises. I don’t want to see a merger, but I certainly understand the need for one. These guys are taking a beating in this economy and they are doing what they can to survive. Don’t know why motorsports are taking such a hit but other sports aren’t. I do know that there were rumors that the Areana Football League would cancel the entier 2009 season, but it hasnt happened yet. You have the Yankees who just signed pitcher CC Sabathia for 7 years for $161 million bucks and offered a deal to another pitcher, 5 years $80 million bucks! NASCAR teams can’t get sponsors, Petty Enterprises can’t stay afloat, banks are failing, home prices have plummeted, hundreds of thousands of people are out of work, but a baseball pitcher can sign a record contract and get paid $23 million a year to work around 35 days during the season, and sometimes they don’t even finish their job (releivers, gotta love em).
Something is wrong with this country. I hope it gets fixed soon.
Not that I really didn’t know that to begin with, but there comes a time in every mans life when he has to come to grips with reality. When he first realizes that he never really has a clue as to what is going on around him and that the one person who does, the one person who keeps him sane and on the right track, is the person he has been married to for almost 10 years. For me, that occurred the other day when my wife suggested I write a sports blog. She seems to be impressed with all the NFL, NASCAR, and BASS stats that I keep stored away in this tiny brain of mine and said that it would be cool if I wrote all that stuff down in a blog. So, knowing that most of the stats I keep on file are actually already out there on the great device that Al Gore (a Democrat LOL) created known to all us mere mortals as the Internet, I have decided to change the format of my blog to a more sports/family/random thoughts (that’s for Cami!) oriented blog. I hope you enjoy what I hope will be enjoyable.
Even if you don’t like sports I may yet have something for you. I hope to share this with friends and family and make this a vehicle with which to express thoughts, encourage discussion, a little trash talk during the season (which for an NFL, NASCAR, and BASS fan never ends), and a place to keep up with me and and my family to see what is going on. I’m sure occasionally I will post some kind of pic or video of the family. They will probably be of Savannah glaring at me with that look of “Dad, you’re kidding right…another fishing show?” Or my wife wishing she had blocked SpeedTV. Ok that last one is not entirely true, I have successfully converted her to a true NASCAR fan and she loves to watch the Panthers.
Speaking of which I guess I can get started on my new format by mentioning tonights game betweent he Panthers and the Bucaneers. It is here in Charlotte and both teams are 9-3 tied for first place in the NFC South division. Tamps beat us in the first game on Oct 12 so the Panthers really need to win this one. And with the last 3 games against Denver, at the Giants and at New Orleans they need to step up and get some of the in the win column if not all of them. The Giants lost this week so the winner of tonights game (the Panthers) will only be one game back for home feild advantage throught the playoffs! Imagine that, the road to the SuperBowl coming through Charlotte!
Well the Bucs are nothing to sneeze at, and they have a tough defense. They have only allowed one, repeat one rushing touchdown this year, which doesn’t bode well for DeAngelo Williams, but I think he has what it takes if he gets the ball 20-30 times he will get it done. Go Panthers! I will update tomorrow after the game.
